A new year has just begun and with it new political challenges are posed. The world economic crisis has been 2008’s distinctive sign, the year when all world economies, and particularly, and even paradoxically, the most developed ones, have suffered the worst economic crisis in decades. 2008 has also been the year of political change embodied by the arrival for the first time in history of a black president, Barack Obama, to the White House. Finally, the new violent outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has destroyed any hope for the dull Annapolis process to succeed. In the domestic context, the economic crisis has also characterized Spain’s 2008: it has increased unemployment rates, frozen the most active economic sector, the building sector, and has finished with the Spanish economy in recession. The year that is now gone has also seen the reelection of Prime Minister Zapatero, and the appointment, also for the first time in history, of a woman as Minister of Defense. So what to expect from 2009? |

Hoy es Nochebuena y mañana es Navidad sings one of the popular Christmas songs in Spain (translated as Today is Christmas Eve and tomorrow is Christmas). The holidays start tonight in Spain and will come to an end next January 7. The time span of two weeks includes the Dia de los Inocentes on December 28, which is Spain's Fool's Day, and the Dia de los Reyes Magos (Three Wise Men) on January 6, the day that, according to the catholic tradition, children receive their holidays presents, in lieu of the more anglosaxon December 25. Since Spain opened up to democracy in 1978, more and people have been incorporating Santa Claus (better known as Papa Noel in Spain) to their Christmas routine, although a majority of Spaniards still celebrate the Wise Men Day on January 6. The article reviews the traditional Nochebuena's TV appearance of King Juan Carlos, typically scheduled for nine o'clock in the evening, broadcast by every major channel and followed by many Spaniards right before having the traditional, family dinner of December 24. |

Standard and Poor’s downgraded Caja Mediterraneo (CAM) and Bancaja from A- to BBB+ last Friday, in a move that was subsequently followed by CAM and Bancaja’s petition that the Rating Agency withdrew their ratings. Standards and Poor’s argued that CAM and Bancaja are more vulnerable than their peers to the economic slowdown already latent in the Spanish economy, that will become more severe in the remaining of 2008 and 2009. |

Bernard L. Madoff ran until last week one of the largest hedge funds in the world, with a reported invested principal of over $50 billion serving investors across the world. Spanish bank Santander, commanded by Emilio Botin, has acknowledged that it had invested over EUR 2 billion in Madoff’s fund through its hedge fund manager Optimal. This is the largest loss of any commercial bank in the world, and undermines, once again, the speculative nature of these unregulated investment vehicles, adding to the controversy and debate about how far deregulation in the financial markets has gone. |

In the last 150 years Spain has undergone periods of less and more stability. Going back to the late nineteenth century Spain’s political regime was a Monarchy from 1887 to 1931 under the auspice of Alfonso XIII, King Juan Carlos I’s grandfather. The last eight years under the ruling of Alfonso XIII were a military dictatorship. In 1931 Alfonso XIII is overthrown and the Second Republic started, a period that saw land reform and a center-left government. |

This week the Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prizes in six different categories, namely in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economics. Many other disciplines that are not represented in the six categories have their own Nobel Prize. This is the case of the Pulitzer Price in Journalism or the Pritker Prize in Architecture. The article reviews the handful of Spaniards that have received the Nobel Prize. |

A majority of high-income countries own a presidential plane that takes the President or the Prime Minister places. The most famous presidential plane in the World is the Air Force One, that carries the President of the United States around. Future planes for the President of the Government of Spain could be called S-plane (Spain’s plane), and Europlane for the future President of the European Union.
